Becoming a Cask Owner

Mackmyra's Reserve Cask program is a unique experience from beginning to end; the perfect gift of an individual, or a fantastic experience to share with friends and family. The concept is based on you personally determining the elements of whisky production, including the type of cask, recipe and maturation.

Next you choose an appropriate name for your whisky, which is then engraved on a brass plaque that adorns the cask. Once you have made your choices, we ship the cask to the warehouse of your choice. When it's ready, we bottle, label and deliver the whisky to your door, so you can enjoy your very own single cask whisky expression.

Following it's Journey

By visiting and sampling your cask you can track its development and determine when the time is right for bottling. Of course you will be able to consult with our knowledgeable whisky experts, who are close at hand to assist with your decisions.

Can't make it to Gävle? For those buying casks from the UK, Mackmyra will be hosting Cask Owner events where we will bring your samples so you can track your cask's progress, guided by one of our experts.

Why Choose Mackmyra?

Mackmyra has been running an open, community-focused Cask Ownership program since 2002, and in that time we've created over 20,000 casks for our customers.

A Bespoke Product:
We want to create your whisky, so we offer options and expertise throughout it's journey. Finish in a different cask? Move the cask to a new location? Create a more personalised label? It's your whisky.

A Unique Product:
No two casks are the same and you get every bottle from the cask.

Step 1: Choose Your Recipe

Mackmyra’s elegant recipe is characterised by the following groups of flavours: fruity, with notes of citrus and pear. Spiciness with notes of aniseed, ginger, cinnamon and cardamom. Herbs, with notes of tobacco leaves, grass and pepper, as well as nutty, with notes of almond. The elegant recipe is the perfect choice for those looking to fully release the oakiness of the cask.

Mackmyra is one of the few distilleries in the world which self-produces its smoky distillate. Both malting and smoking take place in a facility situated close to the distillery using Swedish-grown barley and peat drawn from the nearby Karinmossen (Karin bog). And to add a further Swedish dimension to the smoky flavour, the glowing peat is seasoned with brittle juniper twigs.

Pre-Stored Elegant

This Elegant recipe is also available as Pre-matured Elegant, which means the distillate has been aged in a 200-litre ex-Bourbon cask for four years. Choosing this recipe enables you to enhance your final whisky, producing the fruity character from two different casks. The recipe is also perfect for those who want a shorter waiting period before bottling.

Extra Smoke

If you’re looking for a little more kick in the smoky flavour, check out the Extra Smoke recipe. This features a 50/50 ratio between smoky and elegant malt, resulting in a robustly smoky whisky. Consider combining this recipe with an Oloroso cask for and even more complex finish. Please note, this recipe option is extremely limited and only available at certain times of the year.

Step 2: Choose Your Cask

Swedish Oak

Swedish oak benefits from fewer wood sugars than American oak, which results in less of the sweet caramel notes typically associated with American oak. Casks coopered from Swedish oak creates more robust flavours, imparting the whisky with a spicy character and adding notes of sandalwood, dried ginger and black pepper.

Bourbon is the traditional type of cask to mature single malt whisky. The casks are brought in from the USA where they were earlier used to mature Bourbon. The classic American white oak imbues your whisky with sweet aromas and a rich amber colour. It also gives your whisky a soft round flavour with notes of vanilla, pear, apple, citrus, caramel and honey.

Oloroso (Sherry)

The Oloroso cask is made out of american oak and then saturated with Oloroso wine to give notes of raisin, dried fruit, wine, dark chocolate and grapes. The characteristics of the cask makes for a sweet, round and mellow flavour and a beautiful dark red colour to the liquid.

New American Oak

Whisky matured at new American oak casks gives a complex and rich equation with clear vanilla and toffee notes. The fresh oak makes the whisky develop to an powerful and round taste where the balance between the sweetness and spiciness creates a fantastic interaction. The whisky turns dark amber.

Anniversary Cask

In order to mark 20 years as a Swedish whisky producer, we’ve produced an innovative Anniversary Cask. Over the years, we’ve learned that whisky casks with staves of American oak and heads in new Swedish oak create a perfect fusion of flavour. The Swedish oak is much loved for its spicy notes of black pepper, cardamom and nutmeg, as well as its toffee-like sweetness and almond notes. In combination with the notes of vanilla, toffee and honey in the American oak, it’s no surprise that casks combining different oaks have become so popular.

Step 3: Choose Your Location

Mackmyra Whisky Village - Forest Warehouse

Together with the first cask owners we started building the Forest warehouse in the summer of 2009, which opened the year after when the first casks from the Ambassador campaign moved in. The Forest warehouse lies in the woods next to our Gravity distillery and is the recommended choice if you're looking to fill your cask in person, or visit the cask in the future.

Bodås Mine

In the south of Gästrikland is our largest and oldest whisky warehouse located, surrounded by a mighty forest. In here, the whisky is securely matured, 50 meters below ground in the mountain. Originally built to extract ore, the space is now given to a more precious product.

With such a unique location, this warehouse is perfect for those looking to add an extra level of interest to their cask's story.

Step 4: Choose Your Label

Design Your Label and Cask Plaque

The final step before purchasing your Mackmyra Reserve Cask is to design the label and message to be included on the cask plaque.

Please note, design tool is to be used for example purposes only. The final label design will be discussed with you before bottling. Don't worry if you change your mind - labels and plaque designs can both be amended before bottling or cask filling respectively.

Why 30 Litre Casks?

There’s a logical explanation as to why Mackmyra’s much loved 30-litre casks are the size they are. During the distillation process we carefully separate the “heart” of the distillate, which is the usable portion. Our first self-produced copper pot-stills could hold 100 litres of weak spirit, which produced a “heart” of exactly 30 litres following distillation. So as a result of the volume produced during distillation, the first 30-litre cask was created in the year 2000.

Another major benefit associated with the small casks is that the contact area of the oak in relation to volume is larger than is traditionally the case, which allows the whisky to mature more quickly and intensively.

Joining a Community of Whisky Enthusiasts

The 30-litre cask was released in 2002 under the name Mackmyra Reserve and has attracted over 20,000 dedicated cask owners and ambassadors over the years.

You'll be given access to the 'Cask Web' system where you can monitor your casks progress, request tastings and, when you're ready, send it to be bottled.

But more importantly, you'll be joining an exclusive community of single cask owners. Mackmyra will be hosting UK Cask Owner events, tastings and a group Distillery Visits in the future. As an Ambassador, we'll keep you updated with all the events as they are announced.

Payment Structure

The payment is in two parts; the first to Mackmyra Swedish Whisky Ltd (Mackmyra) to join the Reserve Cask scheme, and the second for UK Excise Duty and Duty VAT.
The first payment to Mackmyra includes the recipe choice, cask type, location choice, maturation management, access to the Cask Web system and insurance. This payment also includes the matured spirit, bottling, standard labelling and delivery to one address once the spirit is ready. It does not include the emptied cask.
The final payment is only for UK Excise Duty and its VAT, invoiced through Mackmyra and paid before delivery. This figure can only be calculated and declared once it is known exactly what quantity and spirit strength the cask produced after bottling.
