Mackmyra Gruvguld (Gold from the mine) has been aged in small casks of 30, 100 and 128 litres, in the mine of Bodås, 50 metres below ground. This whisky is a tribute to our powerful 30-litre casks that have been with us since the start, and more than half of the finished result was aged in these casks of different oak types and finishes.
The new make that was aged, is mainly of the unpeated recipe, with an exception of a few smoky casks for a hint of spiciness. Included in the wide variety of casks used, there are also some that previously stored Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry to add a gentle fruitiness. The casks included in Gruvguld have been stored between five and sixteen years.
Nose: Spicy, berry and fruity with light oily tones, roasted notes of vanilla, oak and butterscotch. A slightly warm oaky spiciness with a feeling of tar and minerals. Sweet tones are found in raisins, almond paste, citrus and candy pears. Varied notes of different whiskys with soft notes of blackcurrant, anise, ginger and tobacco leaves.
Taste: Spicy with a berry fruitiness and oak. Blackcurrant, pear caramel and grapefruit. Soft spicy oak with light tar tones and tobacco leaves. The texture has a certain oilinessAftertaste: Oily, spicy and berry with a drier finish.

Bodås mine is named after the small community Bodås which is located a few miles southwest of Mackmyra. In the 1950s, the mine was home to about 150 men mining ore in the dark mine shafts, 430 metres underground at the deepest point.
After decommissioning we discovered that the mine fit in perfectly with our requirements for a warehouse; it was cool, dark and humid. In addition, we wanted the casks to be safe, the old mine in Bodås was in other words perfect for whisky storage!
Today our casks are safe and secure, maturing in the whisky-scented mine tunnels 50 -metres under the mountain.
